As early as December 26th and reaching a pinnacle in the days following January 1st, carcasses of Christmas trees start to appear on city sidewalks. Since most New Yorker’s live in apartment buildings this can often mean passing small mountains of discarded trees.
Most have been thoroughly stripped though as I walk by I always find myself glancing to see if anyone left any tinsel or missed removing a rogue ornament, some little tell-tale sign of what happened to that tree over the holidays. There’s a tree outside my building that still has a couple of candy canes on it thrown out in the ultimate decorator’s sugar crash?
Not everyone tosses their tree out on the sidewalk, the other night on my walk home I spotted this “illegal dumping”.
